Cook Islands General Transport Ltd was created in 1959/60 from the proceeds of salvaged items at Rarotonga from the shipwreck of the SS Matai.
This enabled the purchase of the Companies first flat deck-truck, which was a K Series Bedford.
The founding Shareholders where Malcolm Grant Sword (Late) and Vaine Nooroa Sword (nee Kino ,nee Browne).
In the early years the Company provided general trucking services which supported the then thriving agricultural industry.
Copra and Pearl Shell from the Outer Islands were delivered from the Inter island wharf at Avatiu to the Export storage sheds at Avarua wharf. The company also transported pineapples, oranges, bananas and various produce from the inter island wharf to the Gregg factory at Vaikapuang, where this produce was processed for the New Zealand market.
This value added product was then transported to Avarua wharf to be shipped to overseas. The Company had its own small workshop facilities a tradition on a larger scale, which continues today. The Company has always had a Maritime background as the founding father was a captain in his own right and had first come to the Cook Islands to operate a small inter island vessel in the mid to late 1950’s.
He was Wharf-finger at the Avarua harbourt, for the Union Steam Ship Company. The Company at various times over the last 4 decades provided truck and forklift hire, taxi and bus services and set up in partner ship, the first Rental Car Company in Cook Islands.
The Company has seen many changes over the years. It has seen the need to specialize and adapt quickly to customer requirements and the ever changing economic conditions. The fact that the Company has evolved with the times, and adapted to the realities of the supply chain, augers well for the future. The Company has maintained its maritime link as Stevedore at the International Port.
The Company diverse operations covers Marine Engineering, Automotive and Heavy Machinery Repairs, General Cartage, Equipment ,Truck, Hiab Trucks, Forklift and general commercial vehicle Hire,Crane Hire, Container Haulage Specialists, Waste Collection and Disposal, Ships Agency, Freight Forwarders Import/Export Agent and the Lloyds Agency for the Cook islands. The Company is renown for its reliability, dependability and constancy of service.
